I don’t think it’s much of a secret that I love food, but I actually am rather fussy. I spend much of my time whining about the quality and authenticity of this and that and I’m constantly bemoaning the scarcity of good Mexican restaurants in Joburg. So, naturally, I feel a bit silly having waited so long to finally try Mexican Fresh.

I’m a woman obsessed. I can’t get their food out of my mind. The place itself is nothing special and barring the odd midweek lunch, I’m far more likely to get take-aways than eat there, but it’s perfectly fine. White walls, the odd splash of red and green and actual Mexican music (no blearing radio, thank heavens!) But, the reasons you really have to put Mexican Fresh on your radar are that it's super well-priced, fresh (I guess the clue’s in the name) and absurdly tasty, authentically Mexican/Tex-Mex food. Yum!

I picked up an order yesterday and it was devoured almost as soon as it hit the kitchen counter! The batter on the jalapeno poppers is light and not too oily, the tacos are packaged with sense (instead of the usual brute force) and the whole menu caters to all tastes and levels of fussiness. They also don’t make it too spicy – you can add chilli to your liking.

As for the desserts… The boyfriend is hardly a desserts person, but we practically had to arm wrestle over the apple pie burrito – honestly one of the best desserts I’ve ever had. The filling was a mysterious mix of apple and spices and something else that made it smooth and creamy but still light; the casing was a tortilla, wrapped tightly, deep fried and then coated with cinnamon and sugar. The words “I love you, but sharing this with you is torture” may have been uttered between mouthfuls…

They do deliver, but only on orders larger than 6 people or for their amazing looking platters. SO worth the drive.

Nics Oh dear, sorry to hear that. I hope you complained to the restaurant so that they have a chance to redeem themselves. I'll still try them as it's been a long time since I had a chilly popper!

Sash I tried the Epsom Down branch. The food was horrible, badly cooked and lacking in flavour. The only part of the meal we enjoyed was the apply burrito dessert. Its cheap and quick, but I'm not going back.
