I’ve found the most wondrous park right in the heart of Sandton! In the middle of the high-rise buildings, shopping malls, and ostentatious mansions of Sandton you will find the magnificent Mushroom Park Farm Park.
I lost my marbles last weekend Saturday ... and probably scared a few little kids and their parents in the process. Run through a grass patch, with a huge grin on your face, and your hands in the air and suddenly everyone thinks you’ve got a screw loose. In my defence I had just discovered something wonderful and it’s not my fault I’m so excitable. For months I’ve been driving down Rivonia Road, staring at the giant Hyundai hot air balloon opposite the Radisson, wondering what the heck was potting on that big open plot and I can’t believe it took me so long to investigate. Last weekend I decided to go exploring and found the most wondrous park right in the heart of Sandton!
In the middle of the high-rise buildings, shopping malls, and ostentatious mansions of Sandton you will find the magnificent Mushroom Park Farm Park (also known as the Hyundai Sky Park), a little oasis for families, dog owners, and lovers of fresh air and open spaces. I felt an instant sense of calm as I pulled my car into the parking lot of Mushroom Farm Park and I couldn’t believe where I was. I absolutely love being out in nature so it was as if I’d just found my own personal Mecca (my memory is a little murky but this is about where the gleeful running started). Once I’d calmed down and stopped running I whipped out my camera to snap pictures of everything - thinking back this probably didn’t help my case and I’m surprised I wasn’t flagged by security and thrown out, but I digress.
Walking through the park I was amazed at how quiet it was and just how beautiful the space is. I’m talking the works - huge trees, rolling pristine lawns, ducks frolicking in a pond, neatly paved walkways, picnic tables and benches, a kiddies play park, and squeaky clean public toilets. The kids area is definitely a highlight of the park – with a huge sandpit, containing a wide variety of colourful jungle gyms, slides, swings and other play equipment, all guaranteed to excite the little ones.
The park is also a great place for runners to do a quick lap as there’s a walkway that takes you around the entire park – and there’s even an outdoor green gym if you want to have a workout in the great outdoors. It’s also the perfect spot to take your dog for a stroll – dogs are welcome, as long as fido is on a leash. For the bird watchers out there, there are also about 80 different species of birds that flock around the pond.
Access to the park is controlled by security guards so it feels completely safe, and entrance is free! The Mushroom Farm Park is situated just off Rivonia Road on Daisy Street, opposite the Radisson – just look for the giant Hyundai Balloon, you can’t miss it! The park is open until 18:00 every day.
